I Am Because We Are

Ubuntu Contemporary Art

“I am because we are” emerges from the desire to create a collective dialogue around an essential question: how is identity constructed when the self is inseparable from its connection to others?

The exhibition brings together 30 contemporary paintings by 23 artists from 10 nationalities. Drawing on the African philosophical concept of ubuntu —“I am because we are”—, the exhibition offers a critical perspective on belonging and difference: to what extent the collective can sustain, shape, or even limit the development of individual identity.

Far from idealizing community, the project upholds a key premise: cohesion does not arise from sameness, but from learning to hold space for difference.

The exhibition unfolds through three curatorial axes. “You”, focused on the face, the body, and portraiture, explores the affirmation of the self under the gaze of the other. “We” forms the conceptual core: community as both support and tension, questioning what we relinquish in order to belong. “Expressions” opens onto gesture and abstraction as vital impulses: identity as rhythm, matter, and emotion—free and open to multiplicity.

Conceived as an experience of active mediation, the exhibition is accompanied by open-ended questions that invite slow looking and personal positioning. The project also included an immersive digital version to extend accessibility beyond the exhibition period.

An exhibition organized by Ubuntu Contemporary Art in the Princesa room on the museum’s second floor.
