Argentine Music, Tango and Folk | Sunday Sounds

    Biglietti Prenota la Tua Visita

Beyond its spectacular collection of contemporary figurative painting, the MEAM offers a wide range of activities and initiatives.

We invite the public to immerse themselves in a unique sound journey where, as is customary at MEAM, music intertwines with art and history.

On some Sundays at 18:00, the museum will open its doors to offer a complete cultural experience, where the audience can enjoy an exclusive concert and explore our exhibitions. This initiative aims to bring live music to all audiences, promoting artistic diversity in a unique setting.

This series is designed as a journey through different musical traditions, representing the sounds that have defined cultures and eras. Each concert will be a window into a different sonic universe, connecting music with the historical and artistic context of the museum. The proposal celebrates the richness of musical styles and their capacity to evoke emotions and stories from different times and places.

Beyond its spectacular collection of contemporary figurative painting, the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) offers a wide range of activities and initiatives.

On this occasion, we will feature the artists:

    • Marcelo Mercadante, bandoneon.
    • Mariano Olivera, guitar

STYLE: Argentine Music, Tango and Folk.

    DESCRIPTION:

Argentine music displays remarkable cultural diversity due to the country’s vast territorial extension and demographic variety, encompassing genres such as tango and folk music.
Tango, born in the outskirts of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, is one of the styles with the greatest international reach, with figures such as Carlos Gardel and Astor Piazzolla. Argentine folk music varies by region: in the northwest, carnavalito, huayno and bailecito prevail; in the north, chacareras and zambas; in the Cuyo region, cueca and tonada; in the southern plains, rural milonga and southern malambo; and in the littoral region, chamamé and chamarrita. Among the most prominent artists are Atahualpa Yupanqui and Mercedes Sosa.
Mercadante and Olivera select some of the most beautiful works from this tradition and recreate them with love and respect for their sources, shaped by their own experiences and sound worlds.

Marcelo Mercadante bandoneonist and composer trained in the tango tradition. Founder of numerous projects in the city of Barcelona, including the Trío Argentino de Tango, the Marcelo Mercadante Quintet and the Marcelo Mercadante Sextet. To date, these projects have produced twelve original recordings. He has collaborated as a bandoneonist—and on occasion as a composer and arranger—with artists such as Joan Manuel Serrat, Miguel Poveda, Martirio, Sílvia Pérez Cruz, Joaquín Sabina, Raphael, Lalo Schifrin, David Dorantes, Susana Rinaldi, Amelita Baltar and Sandra Luna.

Mariano Olivera guitarist and composer trained in the tango tradition and South American music. He has also ventured into jazz and original compositions. He has recorded and toured with artists such as Horacio Avilano, Adriana Varela, Juanjo Domínguez and Luis Salinas.
