Alessio Arena | Sunday Sounds
Beyond its spectacular collection of contemporary figurative painting, MEAM organizes a wide range of activities and initiatives.
We invite the public to immerse themselves in a unique sound journey, where, as is customary at MEAM, music intertwines with art and history.
On some Sundays at 6:00 p.m., the museum will open its doors to offer a complete cultural experience, where the audience can enjoy an exclusive concert and explore our exhibitions. This initiative seeks to bring live music closer to all audiences, fostering artistic diversity in a unique setting.
This series is conceived as a journey through different musical traditions, representing the sounds that have defined cultures and eras. Each concert will be a window into a distinct sound universe, connecting music with the museum’s historical and artistic context. The proposal is to celebrate the richness of musical styles and their ability to evoke emotions and stories from different times and places.
Beyond its spectacular collection of contemporary figurative painting, the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) organizes a wide range of activities and initiatives.
On this occasion we will feature the artist:
Alessio Arena, voice and guitar
DESCRIPTION:
In “Romancero de la Universidad de Stony Brook”, the Neapolitan writer and singer-songwriter intertwines his songs with verses from Spanish literature. A poetic journey where his unique voice and guitar resonate like the echo of an ancient yet never-forgotten tale. In a kind of poetic diary, Alessio sets to music verses by the Machado brothers, García Lorca, Juan Ramón Jiménez, José Hierro, and Reinaldo Arenas. Each note and each word evoke a narration of his stay in New York, as a Spanish professor at Stony Brook University, bringing to life an intimate reflection on the indissoluble bond between music and literature.
Alessio Arena is a Hispanist, writer, and singer-songwriter. His latest book is Il sesso degli alberi (Fandango Libri, 2025), and his most recent music album is Marco Polo (Escenamusic, 2022). He has received awards for his books in Italy, where he also won the Musicultura Festival in 2013 and the Critics’ Choice Award at the Andrea Parodi Prize in 2021.
