Johnny Bigstone, guitar, resonator and vocals. Sweet Marta, harmonica, vocals, washboard and banjokeke.
Johnny Bigstone & Sweet Marta are considered one of the few acoustic duos in Spain performing “Old Blues” and representing the true sound essence of the era. They combine the roots of acoustic blues with traditional American music, evoking the early 19th century and performing songs from the plantations of enslaved Black communities that addressed personal and social issues of the time. Inspired by rhythms and melodies from different styles within the genre such as Delta blues, Piedmont blues, and Old-Time Country, their repertoire includes artists like Jazz Gillum, Reverend Gary Davis, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Blind Blake, as well as original compositions.
Both embarked on a long journey across the United States, the land of the blues. They traveled from north to south along Route 61 (the blues highway), gaining a deeper understanding of the roots of what they feel and therefore what they play. This experience allowed them to see, meet, and perform with great American blues musicians such as Paul Oscher, Greg Izor, Mike Keller, John Primer, Steve Guyger, and the legendary James Duck Holmes, among others.
They have toured numerous blues festivals in France, Spain, Norway, Denmark, and Corsica, and completed a U.S. tour alongside Mark Hummel and Nick Moss.
At MEAM, they fire up their particular locomotive with rhythms and melodies from the various styles of this genre, always in a colorful and very personal way.
A suggestive and vibrant train you cannot miss.
