Beyond its spectacular collection of contemporary figurative painting, the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) organizes a wide range of activities and initiatives. One of these is the classical music series held every Saturday afternoon.

On this occasion, we will feature the artists:

    • Luis Cojal, double bass.

WORKS OF:  Afro-Cuban music and jazz.

    DESCRIPTION:

Two Sounds Project is a solo project that explores the sonority of the double bass and the voice from an authorial perspective.

A proposal that fuses Afro-Cuban and African roots with the freedom of jazz and world music. It is a minimalist format but with great stage presence.

Two Sounds Project is also an authorial work supported by improvisation and rhythmic and sonic research, proposing a musical journey where tradition and contemporary language engage in dialogue. The intimate format of the project seeks a direct relationship with the audience, inviting them to feel like one more member of the stage. Each song is a world full of varied stories where emotions float in the air.

He was born in Havana, Cuba. He began studying music at a very early age, starting his studies in the 1980s and graduating with a Higher Degree in Double Bass from the ISA (University of the Arts of Havana) in 1994. That same year he was invited by the Conservatori Professional de Música de Vila-seca, in Catalonia, to join the string department as a double bass professor, an activity he continues to this day.

Interested in various musical styles and always accompanied by his instrument, Luis Cojal was a member for more than 10 years of the prestigious contemporary music group Barcelona 216, with which he toured Europe extensively. Currently, his professional activity goes beyond the Conservatory, as he is invited by various classical orchestras to perform with them, regularly participates in festivals as a double bassist, and gives masterclasses in specialized centers (Paris, Prague, Boulder-Colorado, etc.).

In 2014 he released his first solo album, CANTO A LOS ANCESTROS, in which he united voice and double bass for the first time, in this case to sing to his Afro-Cuban roots. In 2015 he created and directed the group Afará Ancestors Project together with musicians from Mali and Cuba, with whom he released the album Ilé Mi (2017, Slow Walk Music), a musical bridge between Afro-Cuban and African music. In 2019 he created his own brand, Two Sounds, a musical proposal aimed at showcasing the sonic possibilities offered by blending voice and double bass, without artifice. The project Soundscapes of the Soul was born that same year, displaying all the technical and timbral resources of both the instrument and his voice, while revealing his influences: jazz, Cuban and Afro-Cuban popular music, classical music, contemporary music, world music, and devotional music. In 2021 he co-created, together with stage director Carlos Murias, the musical project DIÁSPORA, a tribute to Mother Africa through singing, double bass, and percussion.

Faithful to his Two Sounds brand, Luis Cojal returns to the stage with a new album: Céfiro. A beautiful, experimental, different record, full of life and color, an exciting personal proposal born from the soul. Each song is a world full of varied stories where emotions float in the air, presented in a unique and creative style.
