The love of Verdi and "verism" · obstacles to loving freely | Saturday Classics

Beyond its spectacular collection of contemporary figurative painting, the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) organizes a wide range of activities and initiatives. One of these is the classical music series held every Saturday afternoon.

On this occasion, we will feature the artists:

    • Joan Garcia Gomà, baritone.
    • Josep Buforn Galan, piano.
    • Laia Cladellas Llargués, soprano.

WORKS OF:  Bizet, Verdi, Mascagni and Leoncavallo

    PROGRAM:

“Intermezzo de Carmen” (Carmen de G. Bizet)

    “Pura si come un angelo”

La Traviata (Teatro La Fenice de Venècia, 1853) de G. Verdi

“Intermezzo de Cavalleria Rusticana (Cavalleria Rusticana de P. Mascagni)

    “Nedda! Silvio!”

Pagliacci (Teatro dal Verme de Milà, 1892) de R. Leoncavallo

    DESCRIPTION:

Sometimes an event or a person prevents two lovers from loving each other freely. Violetta cannot be with Alfredo because Germont asks her to leave him, arguing that they belong to different social classes (his daughter will not be able to marry her fiancé if his family finds out that his brother is with Violetta, a former courtesan).

Nedda cannot freely love Silvio because she is married. Through Verdi, with certain romantic overtones of the well-known Traviata, and entering into the evident verismo of Leoncavallo in Pagliacci, one will experience, through their music, the emotions unleashed by the obstacles encountered in the act of loving.
