AIR AND TEXTURES IN THE DRAWING OF A PORTRAIT WITH JAIME VALERO

PORTRAIT IN GRAPHITE, CHARCOAL AND WASHES WITH GLUE ON PAPER GLUED TO BOARD.

PRESENTATION

During these 24 hours of course we will go through the complete process of working on a drawing from the first stain with graphite, through the different phases and materials, to the final finish and varnishing. It will not be so much about finishing the entire drawing in that time, as making sure we know and practice the various techniques and processes that we will address during the course and that will drastically modify our way of understanding the drawing process.

For this you will receive at the beginning of the course a 300-gram Arches watercolor paper, hot pressed (without any texture, very soft touch), glued to a board, about 30x40cm, to carry out the work proposed for the course and to know the behavior of this type of paper. Along with the paper, you will be given the reference photo for the work that we will do in the course.

MATERIALS

In the work process, the materials that we will use and the indicated time and place for the use of each one of them are very important.

The teacher will provide some of them, such as the final varnish, powdered graphite, powdered carbon or the glue of the gouache.

Regarding those you must bring, although the teacher will adapt to each one of you and the material you have, there will be some essential requirements to be able to work in optimal conditions:

  • GRAPHITE PENCILS

Any brand is valid, but of a certain quality. I use Faber-Castell, but there are many that are worth the same, of similar quality. We will use several of the different hardnesses that they present (at least bring a 5B, 2B, F or HB, 2H and 5H).

  • PRESSED CHARCOAL PENCILS

There are also many brands. Pierre Noire de Conté à Paris is recommended. But anything of similar quality is fine. We will also need at least three different hardnesses (soft, medium and hard or 2B HB 2H or similar). In PIerre Noire they would be H, B and 3B.

  • ERASERS

There are many types and it would be interesting to know them all. At least, bring the classic one (soft from Staedler, Faber-Castell...), and the Faber-Castell rubber pencil, (the one that usually comes with the black brush on the top), this one is essential. In addition, we will use the electric eraser that the teacher will carry for us to test it.

  • BLUR

Various brands and sizes are valid. Bring two or three different thicknesses.

  • BRUSHES

Soft flat brushes of different numbers (worth watercolor, acrylic...). From smaller numbers for details (2, 4...), to medium or large (10, 12, 16...).

  • SMALL PLASTIC PALLET

Watercolor type of small format and very simple

  • OTHER MATERIALS

A whole series of fundamental materials that we must not forget, even if they seem less important:

  1. Pencil sharpener.
  2. Plastic cups for watering down (two or three).
  3. Kitchen paper (one roll).
