Basically it consists of limiting the amount of colors that we use to the purely essential. Many of the great masters used different versions of limited palettes, among which Anders Zorn, John Singer Sargent or Claude Monet, among others, stand out.

Using a limited palette has many benefits:

  • Color harmony. With fewer colors to mix, we almost unintentionally obtain a general harmony in our painting, while the wider our palette, the more we risk that chromatic unity.
  • Simplicity. It's the key. All the great masters of any discipline stress the importance of simplicity. With fewer colors in our mixes, we will find it easier to progress clearly in our paint.
  • Knowledge. The best way to learn the theory and relationships between different colors is to force ourselves to mix them using a limited palette.
  • Cost. We will only need to have spare parts in the colors of our limited palette, as well as some others that we may need for special circumstances. Also, with the limited palette we generally choose more common and cheaper colors.
