    Workshop with Shane Wolf

Popularised by Peter Paul Rubens and widely used throughout Europe in the 18th century, the “3 crayons” technique allows for a vivid and efficient expression of the human figure. In this workshop, Shane Wolf will be teaching his unique approach to this traditional technique of charcoal, chalk, and sanguine. Students will learn about creating strong form from the live model (mostly with charcoal and chalk), and how to see and capture the “hot spots” of the figure (with sanguine). Special attention will also be given to correct proportions and anatomy.

    Drawing materials

    • Sketch pad or sheets of paper for quick pose sketching, at least 30 x 40cm in size
    • 10 full sheets of Canson Mi-Teintes paper (65x50cm) of a mid-tone value (i.e. Lichen, Lilas, Gris Perle, Chanvre Clair, Bleu Clair, Vert Pomme, etc… something on which white chalk will be visible, but nothing too dark either; they can be all the same color or different colors for each sheet)
    • White chalk (I like General’s white chalk pencils; I usually have 4 on the go)
    • 2 - 4 sanguine pencils (I like Conté’s sanguine pencils)
    • Sticks of vine charcoal (I highly recommend Nitram brand, their HB and B charcoal sticks; whatever brand you use, just be sure the charcoal spreads and erases very easily)
    • 2 - 4 charcoal pencils (I use General’s HB pencils)
    • 3 kneaded erasers
    • Tape or clamps for your paper
    • A drawing board large enough for a full sheet of Canson paper (65 x 50cm)
    • Something to sharpen your pencils (i.e. pencil sharpener, knife and sand pad, lead pointer, etc)
    • Sand pad for sharpening charcoal (or just fine grain sandpaper)
    • A small, handheld mirror
    • A chamois cloth or soft cotton cloth
    • Several small makeup sponges (the wedge kind; make sure they don't have any additives or oil in them)
    • A cheap bristle brush, about 2cm wide (filbert or flat)
    • Spray fixative for those who want to fix their drawings (optional)
