DESCRIPTION:
The project “Cantar a Voces” was born with the intention of revitalizing folklore from a contemporary and avant-garde perspective that places the female viewpoint at its core. The proposal develops new a cappella vocal polyphonies, which merge with the sound of tradition and result in a unique and enriching sonority, capable of connecting with diverse audiences. The choir is made up of 20 young singers trained in Barcelona in different musical fields such as jazz, modern music, classical music, or world folklore, and it is directed by Estela Julia.
The project
The project “Cantar a Voces” was created in 2025 with the firm intention of revitalizing folklore from a contemporary perspective that places the female viewpoint at its center. Through this approach, the aim is not only to preserve the essence and richness of musical traditions but also to reinterpret them and give them new life, adapting them to current times. The proposal focuses on exploring and developing new vocal polyphonies that, by merging traditional techniques and harmonies with innovative proposals, result in a unique and enriching sonority, capable of connecting with diverse audiences. This is a musical-theatrical project formed by a choir of 20 women. The performance unfolds through soundscapes created with a cappella voices and the interpretation of small adapted pieces of popular folklore, as well as original songs by the composer and choir director, Estela Julia. Estela is a singer and cellist of jazz, pop, folklore, and singer-songwriter repertoire, trained at ESMUC and the Liceu Conservatory. Her musical arrangements and compositions include movement, choreography, theatricality, lyricism, improvisation, and the use of objects that provide sound, noise, and rhythm. Through these proposals, she seeks to represent scenes from contemporary everyday life, with the naturalness of sound and body. A key aspect of this project is the revalorization of the power of the voice and the word as vehicles of artistic, emotional, and cultural expression. The voice, understood not only as a musical instrument but also as a medium through which ancestral stories, feelings, and knowledge are transmitted, plays a fundamental role in the creation of new forms of communication and connection with the audience. The aim is thus to offer a platform for women’s voices, both performers and composers, to resonate strongly, making their art and their history visible within the panorama of folklore.
